(2nd UPDATE) Soto beats Diaz, wins WBC belt in 'The Event'
MANILA, Philippines – Mexican Humberto Soto won over American David Diaz via unanimous decision and bagged the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title in the undercard of “The Event” Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The scores were 115-111, 117-109 and 117-109 in favor of Soto, who is called “La Zorrita (The Fox).”
The Mexican now has a record of 51 wins, 7 defeats, 2 draws and 1 no contest while “Dangerous” Diaz has 35 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.
Diaz scored a big left in the12th round. Both fighters threw exchanges but Diaz troubled Soto with low blow.
Soto stayed away from Diaz, jabbed away then clinched. Then Soto suddenly threw 5 super punches but Diaz was still standing. Diaz threw a gigantic left, missed, then slipped. Diaz was up again.
Soto threw punches with no clear connection but Diaz fell apparently out of exhaustion. Diaz got up and said he was fine but the referee counted it as a knockdown. - With a report from Agence France-Presse
