MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao has gone to Baguio City to begin training for his May 7 welterweight title clash against American foe "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Accompanied by his brother, Bobby, the 8-division champion pulled off a 25-minute run along the steep track in Sta. Lucia, Baguio.

After the run, Pacquiao proceeded to strengthen his core by doing several sets of sit-ups.

In the afternoon, the Filipino champion performed a series of boxing drills.

Buboy Fernandez, best friend and co-trainer of Pacquiao, said the champion went through his routine on a brutal pace.

"Dito kasi makikita natin kung gaano katindi mag-training ang ating idol," he said.

Pacquiao, hailed as the Fighter of the Decade, has been regularly starting his training camp in the City of Pines for the past two fights now.

The power punching southpaw also trained in Baguio while preparing against Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto in 2009 and Mexico’s Antonio Margarito in 2010.

Pacquiao will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against Mosley in Las Vegas, Nevada.

'Mosley no underdog'

Despite being considered by many as the heavy favorite against his aging American opponent, Pacquiao (53-3-2) refuses to underestimate Mosley (46-6-1).

The fleet-footed Filipino is 32 while Mosley is already 39.

"Tayo ang favor sa fight but hindi dapat tayong magkumpiyansa kasi si Mosley magaling na boksingero. Mag-ensayo tayo nang mabuti," said Pacquiao.

Pacquiao said Mosley, who won world titles in 3 weight classes, proved to be faster than most of his boxing foes.

"Si Mosley, mabilis iyong kamay at paa at tumatakbo-takbo," he said.

Pacquiao’s conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, shared the same sentiment.

"It’s hard to tell if Manny can knock down ‘Sugar’,” he said. “[We] don’t take him lightly."

For the length of his Baguio training, Pacquiao will be staying at the Cooyesan Hotel Plaza.

After more than 3 weeks in Baguio, he will fly to Los Angeles, California for the next phase of his preparations. – With reports from Dhobie de Guzman and Rex Bate, ABS-CBN News Baguio
