Khan: Pacquiao inspiration in win over Barrera
British boxer Amir Khan said that Manny Pacquiao was the inspiration behind his recent win over Mexican champion Marco Antonio Barrera.
Khan, who has Freddie Roach as his new trainer, acknowledged both Roach and Pacquiao for their contribution to his victory.
The 22-year-old boxer prevailed over the 35-year-old Barrera via a fifth round technical decision Saturday in Manchester, England.
In an article by Phil Barnett of PA Sport posted on Sportinglife.com, Khan said he knew what to do to Barrera because “it was the same way Manny beat him. He made it easy, hit him and moved, hit him and moved.”
The Olympic lightweight silver medalist added, "When I was speaking to Manny, he said that's the way to beat him - and that's what we did.”
"I spoke to him in the changing room after the fight - he was watching it in America, and he was over the moon,” he shared.
Khan also said he would “love” to return the favor to Pacquiao by helping him beat Ricky Hatton.
Khan was Pacquiao’s sparring mate while training for his fight against Oscar de la Hoya.
The report, however, said Khan admitted he has “split loyalties” between Pacquiao, his training partner, and Hatton, his fellow Briton.
But he noted that he is happy to be going back to Los Angeles to spar with Pacquiao once again, saying “it does me good as well."
"He's the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world - and if I can handle him and spar really well against him, then it's going to take me to the next level,” added Khan.
He also told Barnett that he would love to help Pacquiao because “he's a friend. We have a good chat; we go for a run together in the mountains and stuff… He helps me out with some good advice, and it's good to have someone to look up to."
