RP-711 cyclists’ bid stalled in Tour of Vietnam
MANILA, Philippines -- The bid of Lloyd Lucien Reynante and Mark Sean Guevarra to boost the Roadbike Philippines-711 squad's standings last Sunday came to halt after other squads ganged up on them in the 6th leg of the Binh Duong TV Cup Tour of Vietnam.
Reynante and Guevarra, the 2009 Tour of Luzon kingpin, surged away from the pack in the 134-km drive from Tuy Hoa to the popular tourist spot of Na Thrang, but got caught up by the scrambling field with a kilometer left from the finish line.
“If the other teams did not gang up on Lloyd and Mark with a kilometer to go, we could have finished better,” said team director Ric Rodriguez in an e-mail message after Reynante and Guevarra got swallowed up in a 61-man wave near the end of the race.
Reynante placed 14th, Mark Rhome Antonio 18th and Guevarra 21st with identical times of three hours, 12 minutes and 48 seconds behind leg winner Do Tuan Anh in the stint backed by 7-11 convenience store chief Vic Paterno.
“Anyway, we have a rest day on Monday. Bawi na lang tayo sa remaining three stages,” Rodriguez said of the trip sanctioned by PhilCycling.
The 31-year-old national rider and son of Tour legend Mawi Reynante slid a notch in the overall standings but was still the best Filipino bet in the competition at 17th place (16:17.05), 1:51 off Mongolian yellow jersey wearer Tuguldur Tuulkhangai (16:15.14).
International rookies Antonio (16:18.19) and Cortez (16:18.29), protégés of Roadbike Phils. president and team manager Bong Sual, were at No. 27 and No. 29, respectively.
After 6 legs of the nine-stage series organized by Vietnam’s largest TV network, the RP 7-11 riders also remained at No. 6 (39:13.11), still 4:46 away from team frontrunner Domesco Dong Thap (39:08.25).
Rodriguez said today’s Stage 7 will be another short 97-km. contest from Na Thrang to the city of Phan Rang, site of a former American military air force base during the Vietnam War.
