MANILA, Philippines – Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is still looking for an opponent for his April 14 fight date.
He was supposed to fight veteran Mexican boxer Luis Arceo, but his trainer/manager Vincent Parra told Boxing Scene that the fight was off.
“Arceo’s tough as nails, and he’d be a good opponent, but from my understanding there’s a couple other names that are in the mix now,” Parra said.
“He’ll still be on the card, but Mercito might be fighting someone else at the end of the day,” he added.
Gesta will fight in the undercard of the Brandon Rios-Richard April card.
Rios was originally slated to fight Cuban boxer Yuri Gamboa, but that fight has since been cancelled. Gesta volunteered to replace Gamboa in the main event, but the slot went to Abril instead.
Gesta is also reportedly being considered for a potential fight against Juan Manuel Marquez on July.
Parra said that no matter who Gesta fights on April 14, the Filipino boxer will prove that he is ready for a shot at a world championship.
“We think we’re ready for a title shot now, and this fight is going to show that,” Parra said.
“As far as July 14, it doesn’t matter if it’s a title shot at 135-pounds, against a Miguel Vazquez or at 140-pounds against Marquez. He (Gesta) is hungry to show what he can do,” he added.
Gesta has a 24-0-1 (win-loss-draw) record, with 12 wins coming by knockout.
