MANILA – Import James Mays powered the San Mig Coffee Mixers past the Barangay Ginebra Kings, 90-80, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner's Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
Mays was everywhere, scoring 29 points and grabbing 29 rebounds, leading the Mixers to their second straight win in the Commissioner's Cup, according to the PBA website.

"He's just everywhere. His motor is really high. He's a tall Rudy Hatfield who gets the loose ball and the loose rebounds," said San Mig coach Tim Cone.

"We didn't see that in his first game, but we saw that tonight. He's a real key in our win," he added. "We can really be a contender this conference with him."

The Coffee Mixers handed the Gin Kings their second loss in the conference.

Ginebra came out strong and built a seven-point lead in the first half, but fell short in the fourth quarter as Mays, Ian Sangalang and Raffy Reavis led the assault for the Mixers.

San Mig also benefited from the defense of key local players, Reavis, Marc Pingris and Alex Mallari.

"It's a real luxury having guys like Ping, Rafi and Alex who are tall, lanky defenders. Once one gets into foul trouble, we have others who can come in and be versatile," said Cone.

"James was a monster off the boards while Ping was a monster in hustles," he added.

Ginebra's lost despite a 35-point, 14-rebound effort by import Leon Rodgers.

Japeth Aguilar and LA Tenorio also scored 12 and 11 respectively for the Kings.
