PBA: Purefoods changes name to B-MEG Derby
MANILA, Philippines – Following their successful campaign in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup, All-Filipino champions Purefoods TJ Giants have changed their name to B-MEG Derby Ace Llamados.
However aside from the new name, head coach Ryan Gregorio promised their fans that the team will display the same character and attitude in the court.
“We promise the fans that we will keep up the legacy of Purefoods,” Gregorio said in PBA.ph as his team prepares its campaign for the PBA Fiesta Conference set to begin Sunday at the Big Dome.
“Our change in name doesn’t change the character of our team. We will be gunning for back-to-back titles,” he added.
B-MEG is a flagship brand of San Miguel-Pure Foods' feeds business.
"We believe that our B-MEG brand will benefit from the tremendous exposure PBA gave to the Purefoods TJ Giants. We expect the Derby Ace Llamados to carry on the winning tradition of the TJ Giants," San Miguel Pure Foods Company president Butch Alejo was quoted in the report.
Team governor Rene Pardo, for his part, said he is optimistic that the team will keep their winning tradition as they have maintained through the years.
The franchise, which underwent several name changes from Coney Island Ice Cream, Purefoods Oodles, Purefoods Chunkee to Purefoods Tender Juicy, joined the pro league in 1988. It has already won 8 championships, including 5 in all-Filipino conferences.
Gregorio sees San Miguel and Alaska as the biggest threats to their goal of winning the modern-day grand slam.

I'm an SMB fan but eversince San Miguel Corp. owns 4 teams in the PBA, I not only lost interest in the league but I have stopped watching it then. I must admit that I tried to get that interest back but I just can't. I feel like watching a friendly game everytime they play at each other. Another thing is since San Miguel Corp owns 4 teams in the PBA, they are naturally powerful and can manipulate the outcome of the game. It seems that the refs and the officials have no choice but to bow down before them.
