MANILA – Filipino boxing champion Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo will be staking his WBO minimumweight title when he fights on foreign soil against a Mexican challenger this weekend.

Sabillo will be squaring off against Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez Jr. in Mexico on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time).

The 30-year-old Ilonggo underwent training in the US before flying to Monterrey, Mexico for his title fight.

“I pray that I win this fight,” Sabillo said in Jerome S. Galunan Jr.’s report to Philboxing.

He also thanked ALA Promotions for the backing he received while preparing for the overseas fight.

“I am very thankful for the support given to me by the Aldeguer and Guanzon families as well as to the writers – who helped me a lot,” said Sabillo.

In his most recent fight, the Filipino boxer eked out a split draw against Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua.

Sabillo is no stranger to fighting in hostile territory. He won the interim WBO title in Colombia, where he defeated local fighter Luis dela Rosa in 2013.

He is expecting a tough fight from Rodriguez, who boasts of 9 knockouts in 13 victories.

The fight will be aired locally on ABS-CBN Sports+Action on Sunday.
