Viloria marks return with win over Puerto Rican

Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria returned from a nearly year-long hiatus with a unanimous decision victory over Puerto Rican boxer Juan Herrera Sunday at the Texas Station Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

The former world champion Viloria marched to the 33rd win of his career with a straightforward victory, 98-92, 98-92 and 97-93, ably controlling the less experienced Herrera (9-8).

Viloria used his jab early to take control, but his one year of inactivity showed as he rarely threw combinations, settling instead for single punches.

Viloria last fought in April 2013, when he lost a split decision to Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada that saw him drop the World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association flyweight belts.

The bout against Herrera served as a tune-up for Viloria’s May 31 fight date in Macau, which will be headlined by Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire.

He has no opponent yet for that card, but his manager, Gary Gittelsohn, told RingTV.com that they want a "meaningful fight" for Viloria.

"I've discussed our 'wish list' with (Top Rank chief executive) Bob (Arum), but nothing is yet locked in," said Gittelsohn.
