MANILA – Nonito Donaire Jr. is making a serious mistake if he’s taking Guillermo Rigondeaux lightly, said boxing trainer Jeff Mayweather.

Mayweather, a retired boxer and uncle of unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr., said the “Filipino Flash” has a tough fight ahead against the two-time Olympic gold medalist from Cuba.

“Most people think Donaire's gonna squash him,” said the elder Mayweather in an interview with Hustle Boss

“I don't see that because Rigondeaux is a very good puncher and he's got power, too.”

Mayweather said it will be risky for Donaire to engage Rigondeaux in close combat.

Although Rigondeaux is regarded as a newbie with an 11-0 record, he has garnered a total of eight knockout wins for a 72.73% KO percentage.

One mistake could mean lights out for the Philippine-born boxer, said Mayweather.

“If Donaire puts pressure on him and not respect his power, he'd probably get knocked out,” said Mayweather.

He admitted that Donaire has grown popular in boxing circles.

But he attributed Donaire’s popularity to Manny Pacquiao’s “waning career."

“I think he's getting more praise because he's in Pacquiao's shoes, he's the next guy in line.”
