MANILA, Philippines – The Petron Lady Blaze Spikers made National University (NU) stalwart Dindin Santiago the first overall pick when the Philippine Superliga held its first-ever draft Wednesday afternoon at the NBA Café in SM Aura.
Santiago, the UAAP Season 76 Best Spiker, wrapped up her UAAP career by towing the Lady Bulldogs to the Final Four, where they were upset by eventual champions Ateneo.
AirAsia, picking second, took two-time UAAP Most Valuable Abigail Maraño of De La Salle University.
Maraño will thus be reunited with college teammates Michele Gumabao, Melissa Gohing, Stephanie Mercado and Cha Cruz in AirAsia.
RC Cola took national team campaigner Iari Yongco with the third pick, while Cagayan Valley tabbed San Beda standout Janine Marciano with the fourth pick.
PLDT MyDSL selected two-time UAAP Best Setter and former Ateneo skipper Jem Ferrer with the fifth pick, while Generika-Army took standout libero Christine Agno with the seventh and last pick of the first round.
Among those who attended the event were PSL ambassadress Gretchen Ho, PSL and Sportscore president Ramon Suzara and PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico.
Prior to the draft, Suzara said the PSL “provided our players with an ultimate venue where competition is tougher and the stakes are higher.”
“Next year, there will be 23 players graduating from the UAAP alone. The NCAA and the other leagues are also about to let go of many other quality players,” said Suzara, as quoted by The Philippine Star.
“The PSL will be looking forward to giving them a great opportunity to continue playing the game they love even after their collegiate careers,” he said.
