Phil Younghusband cited as one of Asia's best
MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Azkals striker Phil Younghusband was included in a list of the top performing football players in Asia for the month of March by football website Goal.com.
Goal.com put together a squad of the best Asian footballers through the month of March in a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Younghusband getting the nod as the Best Striker.
“The Azkals had to be the biggest story of the AFC Challenge Cup with their run to third place, and the former top scorer for Chelsea’s youth team became a hero to his country after netting six goals and earning the tournament’s Golden Boot,” the website said.
“The 24-year-old striker had a fine tournament, including a decisive double in the win over India, as well as the opener in their semi-final defeat to Turkmenistan,” it added.
Younghusband also scored a brace in the Philippines’ third-place game against Palestine, which they ended up winning 4-3.
Aside from Younghusband, the other members of the Asia XI for March were: Baba Malick of Lekhwiya at goal keeper; Salem Al Dosari of Al Hilal at right back; Alex Wilkinson of the Central Coast Mariners at center-back; Mohammad Nosrati of Perspolis at center back; and Hassan Ashjari of Sepahan at left back.
Midfielders Pak Nam-Chol I of North Korea, Shinji Kagawa of Borussia Dortmund, Suchao Nuchnum of Buriram United and Nam Tae-Hee of Lekhwiya were also included in the squad.
Graham Arnold of the Central Coast Mariners was cited as the best manager for the month of March.
