Marano eager to reunite with college teammates
MANILA, Philippines – Two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Abigail Maraño will reunite with her former college teammates after being drafted by Air Asia Zest with the second pick in the first-ever Philippine Superliga (PSL) draft on Wednesday.
Maraño, a three-time UAAP champion with De La Salle, will reunite with Michele Gumabao, Melissa Gohing, Stephanie Mercado and Cha Cruz in the PSL.
"Masarap sa feeling kasi, sa Air Asia, ang mga teammates ko before, mga former DLSU Lady Spikers, maglalaro din sila under Air Asia," Maraño said after the draft.
Maraño ended her UAAP career on a sad note as her Lady Spikers fell to the Ateneo Lady Eagles despite holding a thrice-to-beat advantage in the Finals series.
She admitted that adjusting from the collegiate level to the professional will be difficult, but she believes that she can make it with help from her teammates.
"I think it will be a bit difficult, pero somehow, okay naman kasi ang ginagawa ko po, ang ginagawa namin nila Michele, kailangan enjoy kami this time and (play with) less pressure," said Maraño. "Enjoy lang."
Air Asia head coach Ramil de Jesus, who also coaches the Lady Spikers in the UAAP, said in an interview with The Philippine Star that Maraño will be "an important piece in our campaign this conference."
Meanwhile, National University standout Dindin Santiago was picked first overall by the Petron Blaze Lady Spikers.
PSL's second season begins on May 10 with its All-Filipino Conference.
