Methodical Melindo now going for knockouts
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Milan Melindo has never been known for his knockout power, but "El Metodico" is now more willing to go for knockouts as he seeks another shot at a world championship.
Melindo failed in his first world title try, losing a decision to Juan Francisco Estrada in Macau in July 2013. It was his first professional loss, although he rebounded with a decision win over Jose Alfredo Rodriguez later that year.
On ANC's "Hardball" sports show Wednesday, Melindo said his style is now evolving to the point where he is comfortable in seeking stoppages.
"Nagma-mature na po 'yung istilo ko," he said. "I look forward po doon sa, kailangan na po tapusin ‘yung kalaban, para wala na pong mangyari, wala na pong tsansa ang kalaban na maka-tsamba pa."
"I look forward po sa knockout," he said.
Melindo has typically been a slow-starter, using the early rounds to feel out his opponent before breaking them down. Only 12 of his 30 career victories have come by knockout.
Melindo will return to action on May 10, although his opponent has yet to be determined. He is hopeful that a strong performance in this fight will lead to another shot at a flyweight title.
"Kailangan po naming lumaban at laging manalo para umakyat po 'yung rank," he said.
