MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and newcomers Manila Patriotic School (MPS) stunned separate rivals to make their presence felt at the start of the 20th Fr. Martin Summer Cup.
The debuting MPS Patriots, who are playing in their first inter-school competition, turned to four prolific players to outplay the San Beda-B Red Cubs, 93-86, in overtime in the juniors division.
Marc Young tallied 16 points for MPS, while teammates Kenneth Villapando and Steven Andres each added 14.
The Patriots went ahead, 77-76, with 32.2 seconds off a drive by Andres.
But a split at the line from San Beda’s Rob Mendoza tied the count at 77-all with five seconds left.
The Patriots later took charge anew, 85-81, with 2:27 left thanks to triples by Andres and Marc Ordinario.
Mendoza’s trey with 1:42 to go gave San Beda its last taste of the lead, 86-85, before MPS regained control thanks to repeated attacks by Andres and Villapando.
Transferee Dave Moraldo sizzled with 27 points and Kyles Lao added 18 as they led the Maroons to an 88-77 victory over defending Division 2 Cup champions Ateneo-B Blue Eagles in the lone seniors game.
Moralde, who is coming out of a year-long residency period after leaving San Beda two years ago, banged in 13 points in the second period alone.
His efforts helped the Maroons move away from a 23-21 first quarter lead and gain a nine-point advantage, 49-40, at halftime.
Two triples from Moralde at the start of the third period helped the Maroons take an 11-point lead in the ensuing play, and they led by 11 again, 63-52, after a Lao drive with 5:14 to go.
