Trainer reveals who can beat Mayweather
Outspoken boxing trainer Roger Mayweather claims only a heavier fighter with boxing skills is capable of beating his nephew, unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Roger, who trains Mayweather along with the latter’s father, Floyd Sr., said his nephew remains unbeatable in his weight class.
“Obviously, he (Floyd) was better when he was younger, but he is still better than 99% of the guys that are out there today,” Roger told On the Ropes Boxing Radio. “He is better and smarter than 99% of the guys out there today.”
“The only guys that could actually beat my nephew is a guy that outweighs my nephew, if he outweighs my nephew and can box. Those are the only kind of guys that can beat him,” added Roger.
“But guys in his weight class, nah,” the trainer said. “Guys in his weight class ain’t going to beat him.”
Among the “guys in his weight class” is Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, whom Roger quickly shot down as a potential opponent for his nephew.
“He ain’t gonna fight Floyd to save his life. He ain’t gonna fight Floyd, period,” said Roger. “I don’t give a damn if he does get past Bradley. He ain’t gonna fight Floyd anyways.”
In any case, Mayweather is focused on his upcoming fight against Argentina’s Marcos Maidana on May 3, and Roger said the unbeaten boxer has been looking “fine.”
“He’s fine, he has been looking like Floyd,” said Roger. “The more he fights, the more active he is, the less training he has to do. So the best thing to do is that they keep him active.”
Mayweather is targeting a 46th consecutive professional victory.
