Gesta will be 'aggressive, sharp' vs Cuero
MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta will be “very aggressive and sharp” when he fights Colombian boxer Oscar Cuero on April 14 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
In an interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, Gesta’s trainer Vince Parra said the boxer had just finished an eight-week training camp.
“(Gesta) is right on track. He looks good and I expect a lot of action. I expect a very, very aggressive and sharp Mercito Gesta,” Parra said.
Parra added that Gesta’s father, Anecito, joined them at the training camp which proved to be a big help in conditioning and motivating the 24-year-old fighter.
Gesta’s foe, Cuero, holds a record of 15 wins against seven losses, with 12 wins coming by knockout. Their bout will be televised on HBO, which would be Gesta’s debut on the network.
“(We are) looking forward to a good HBO debut and with the fight being broadcast to the Philippines, Mercito is excited about that,” Parra said.
“Even though we didn’t get the big name opponent that we might have wanted, we are looking at this as a great opportunity because we have a tough opponent, even though his record isn’t that great,” he added.
Parra said that Cuero is a very experienced boxer, having fought over 300 amateur fights.
Gesta hopes to have a dominant victory against the Colombian fighter, which may lead him towards a shot at a world championship later this year.
