Pacquiao hones darting skills
Manny Pacquiao is currently in his closed-door training stage as his bout with Ricky Hatton is less than three weeks away.
But despite his rigid schedule focused on sharpening his flair in the boxing ring, he still found time to hone his skills in playing darts.
Tournament organizer Rhen Fuentes told PhilBoxing.com that Pacquiao showed great improvement as a dart player.
"When I met him he used to be 5, but as of now he is an 8," Fuentes rated Manny on a scale of 1 to 10.
In February, Hatton defeated the world’s pound-for-pound king in a darts game played during their UK promotional tour.
Sassyqarla.com reported that with this loss in mind, Pacquiao expressed in April that he wants to have a darts rematch after the “Battle of the East and West.”
In fact, Pacquiao just sponsored the $30,000 Pacmania Open Steel Tip Dart Tournament at the Wilshire Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
PhilBoxing.com’s Dong Secuya reported that almost 200 players joined the event including top US players Chris White, Darren Young, Scotty Burnett and Robert Heckman.
Top players from the Philippines also participated in the tournament like Fuentes, Nico Depenos and Lito Moises.
Depenos already won the singles championship in the Pacmania tournament.
According to Fuentes, the event is his and Pacquiao’s idea.
He related to Philboxing.com, "I told Manny that there are many good Filipino dart players in the US who could stand on their own among the world's best who just needed to be given enough exposure. So we came with the idea of putting up tournaments."
Fuentes, the team captain of the San Francisco Darts Club, also shared that there will be more darts tournaments following the success of their first event.
“We have another one calendared in June already. We are also going to have a tournament during Pacquiao's birthday in December with a total purse of $60,000," he said.
