Azkals draw with Qatari side Al-Ahli
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) The Philippine Azkals wrapped up their training camp in Doha with a 1-1 draw against Qatari club Al-Ahli SC early Tuesday morning, Manila time.
In their last friendly match of their training camp, the Azkals took the lead in the 67th minute when Juani Guirado scored to make it 1-0.
The Azkals had been controlling the match until that point, but the Qataris were able to deny their scoring chances until Guirado, a second half substitute for Rob Gier, finally broke through with a header off a corner kick.
Al-Ahli salvaged a draw when they equalized off a counter-attack in the 80th minute, however.
“It was a good test match for us, the score notwithstanding,” Azkals team manager Dan Palami said. “We dominated the game and was able to check most of the players.”
Prior to Guirado’s goal, Jason De Jong and Simone Rota also had goal-scoring chances within three minutes of each other in the first half.
De Jong was able to round the goal-keeper and get off a shot on goal, but his attempt was cleared by the line of defense in the 34th minute. In the 37th, Rota saw his attempt go straight to the goal-keeper.
It was the Azkals’ second game against Al-Ahli. They previously beat the Qatari club in 2012, 3-1, thanks to a brace from Phil Younghusband and a goal from Denis Wolf.
The draw followed up the Azkals’ 3-0 win against Nepal last April 9, the national team’s first win under head coach Thomas Dooley.
