MANILA, Philippines – The San Miguel Beermen will try to lock up the second seed in the PBA Commissioners Cup when they take on the Air21 Express Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

A win will give SMB their seventh victory of the conference and the second spot in the league standings, which comes with a twice-to-beat bonus in the playoffs.

“Our goal in the elims is to win as many games as we can,” San Miguel coach Biboy Ravanes told PBA.ph. “This is a game that we will try our very best not to slip away.”

Win No. 7 will allow San Miguel to avoid a possible tie with Alaska at second place. The Beermen and the Aces will battle in a playoff for the second seed if SMB loses tonight and Alaska beats San Mig Super Coffee on Easter Sunday.

“We’ll not look at that (No. 2 spot). It’s a cliché, but we will just look at the particular game we play,” said SMB coaching consultant Todd Purves.

San Miguel is the heavy favorite against Air21, which has lost four of their last five assignments. The Express is now out of the fight for a best-of-three quarterfinals with an inferior quotient in a possible tie with Rain or Shine and Barangay Ginebra for the sixth spot.

The Beermen are coming off a 97-88 victory against San Mig Coffee last Saturday.

Game time is at 8 p.m.
