Chiz to grace nat’l juniors chess championships

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero will be the guest of honor when the grand finals of the 2012 National Age Group and National Juniors Chess Championships get underway on April 23-30 at the Tanauan Event Center in Tanauan City, Batangas.

Other personalities who will grace the ceremonies are Tanauan City Mayor Sonnia Torres-Aquino and other city officials, National Chess Federation of the Philippines officials led by its chairman and president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., secretary-general Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr., and organizing committee chairman Atty. Raul V. Canobas.

After the completion of the Luzon, Vizayas and Mindanao legs of the tournament, the 180 qualifiers for the 12 categories in the Age Group Championships will contend for the title and a berth in the delegation to the 2012 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the 30 finalists in the national juniors tourney will vie for the bragging rights as the country's juniors champion, as well as the chance to represent the Philippines in the 2012 World Juniors Chess Championships in Athens, Greece.

A tight race for the juniors title is expected with 2010 Juniors title-holders Fide Master (FM) Paul Bersamina and National Master (NM) Joey Albert Florendo, 2011 titlist FM Marie Joseph Turqueza, FM Haridas Pascua and NM Alcon John Datu in the line-up.

Meanwhile in the women’s division, NM Janelle Mae Frayna will defend her title against FM Cherry Ann Mejia, NM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and NM Jedara Docena. By Marlon Bernardino
