10,000 Fil-Ams to watch Pacquiao's ceremonial pitch
The world’s pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao will make an appearance at a San Francisco Giants game Tuesday in California to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The Giants will go against the San Diego Padres on Filipino Heritage Night, an event that aims to highlight the Filipino culture and community.
“We are extremely grateful for this relationship between the Giants and the Filipino community,” said Tom McDonald, Giants senior vice president of consumer marketing, in an article on the Giants website (sanfranciscogiants.mlb.com).
“This heritage event has grown to be one of the largest programs of its kind, bringing together a celebration of athletics, community and culture," he added.
McDonald also said that they expect around 10,000 Filipino-Americans to show up at the Major League Baseball event. They also project that about $50,000 in charitable proceeds will be raised.
The Giants website article also noted that a portion of the Filipino Heritage Night ticket proceeds will go to Filipino non-profit organizations including the Manilatown Heritage Foundation, Filipino American Arts Exposition and ABS-CBN Foundation's Bantay Bata program.
Those who bought the special Filipino Heritage game ticket, meantime, will get a limited edition Manny Pacquiao bobblehead wearing a Giants jersey and a title belt. They will also be assured of seats in the Filipino Heritage section at the AT&T Park.
Al Perez, president of the Filipino American Arts Exposition, said, “On behalf of the community organizations, I would like to thank the Giants for their commitment in celebrating and honoring the Filipino American community with this event.”
“This year's Filipino Heritage game is shaping up to be the best ever with all-star entertainment during the Filipino Festival and a special tribute to Filipino American veterans during the pre-game ceremonies at homeplate,” added Perez.
Manny Pacquiao is also expected to make a special guest appearance on the festival stage along with his trainer, Freddie Roach.
Tuesday’s event is the first of two Filipino Heritage Nights that the Giants will host this season. The second night will be held on Sept. 16, when the Giants face off with the Colorado Rockies.—with a report from Reuters. Photo from Tim Starks, "The Queensberry Rules" boxing blog
