Donaire starts sparring for Vetyeka challenge
MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire has begun sparring to prepare for his May 31 bout against South Africa’s Simpiwe Vetyeka in Macau.
Ronnie Nathanielsz on PhilBoxing reported that Donaire went three rounds against Cuban prospect Remy Aleye -- the boxer’s first rounds of sparring in “a long, long time.” [http://philboxing.com/news/story-94414.html]
The sparring session was held at the ALA Gym in Cebu.
“I feel great,” Donaire told Nathanielsz, adding that he was “a little tired, although my heart rate was good.”
Aleye “is a good boxer, and we are happy with the sparring we had,” admitted Donaire.
Donaire also acknowledged that he is not yet in shape, although his weight is down to 138 pounds from 145 pounds.
“The Filipino Flash” figures to hold another sparring session on Monday before returning to Manila.
Donaire is challenging Vetyeka for the WBA featherweight title in what will be his first fight at that weight class.
