Pacquiao hits peak, gets day-off
LOS ANGELES, California – A day after fans and media were all over Manny Pacquiao in San Francisco, Manny is back in Los Angeles to resume his training.
On Wednesday morning, Manny chose to jog at one of his favorite routes, the trek up Griffith Park.
The uphill road goes up a little over three kilometers and Manny runs this from the bottom up.
The incline of this road crawling up of Griffith Park is quite steep. According to running experts, this makes it all the more difficult compared to running on flat roads, and this is very important in Manny’s conditioning plan.
After Manny worked his way seemingly effortlessly up the hill for 30 minutes, he did some more shadow boxing and abdominal crunches to work up more sweat.
After a quick breakfast, Manny was supposed to take a nap and head on to the Wildcard Gym for the afternoon training session.
But since Manny got a little more tired than expected from the San Francisco trip, and the fact that coach Freddie Roach is quite content with where Manny is today, conditioning-wise, they decided to give him the rest of his day off.
In fact, as early as last week, longtime trainer Buboy Fernandez already saw Manny hit his peak, and he wanted to make sure that they would not overtrain him.
“Last week palang, nagulat talaga kami. Nakatapos na nga sya ng 12 rounds, tapos humihingi pa sya ng extra na training. Ayun, sinabi ko na kay Freddie na natamaan na ata ni Manny yung peak nya. Para hindi tayo ma-sobrahan,” said Fernandez.
According to Coach Freddie, since Manny has hit his peak, they are very cautious to not over-train him hence, the break for the day.
“We hit it a little earlier than planned. We cut back his sparring a little bit. We'll go six rounds tomorrow but I don't want him to over-do it and over-train. I felt it was good day to give him a day off. It’s part of the process,” noted Roach.
Pacquiao’s trainer added, “We're always cautious of that, we've known him for eight years. It’s hard to give Manny a day off. He might show up anyway. But if he does, I'll tackle him.”
The fight is just ten days away, and the whole Team Pacquiao is now very cautious with keeping the pound-for-pound king in perfect shape so that all he has to worry about is keeping with the game plan in order to beat the pride of Manchester, England.
