Donaire plans to continue moving up in weight
MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire started his career as a flyweight and has since won titles in three different weight divisions, as well as an interim title in a fourth.
Despite this, he is planning to conquer more weight divisions.
Donaire on May 31 will challenge South Africa’s Simpiwe Vetyeka for the WBA featherweight belt but said he will continue to go up in weight as he grows older.
“I want to go higher,” Donaire said on Tuesday. “I want to conquer 126 (featherweight).”
“Kung ma-conquer ko ‘yun, then aakyat ako ng 130 – junior lightweight,” he added.
Donaire said he may wait for a potential rematch against Cuban rival Guillermo Rigondeaux, but stressed that he will not be put off if it does not push through.
“Hihintayin ko ‘yung rematch, kung aakyat din si Rigondeaux,” he said. “Kung hindi naman, wala din akong problema doon.”
“For me, I have a bigger goal in mind – 130, 135 (pounds),” he said. “Siguro mga 140 (light-welterweight) ang aabutan ko.”
But he is also confident that he will have no trouble making the 126-pound weight limit for his bout against Vetyeka.
“I’m about 140 (pounds) right now, which is okay,” he said. “It’s gonna be easy (to make weight) knowing that the Philippines is really hot, it’s very humid. It’s gonna be easy.”
