PeƱalosa goes for broke vs 'JuanMa'
Gerry "Fearless" Peñalosa will be shooting for a third world title as he collides with World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in a battle between experience versus youth.
The 36-year-old Peñalosa, viewed by many as the underdog in the fight, will have to be in his best condition ever as he faces the 25-year-old champion at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
“To me, he is just a basic fighter. I’ve seen it all in my career and I’m confident I will defeat him,” the Filipino said in a report on Fightnews.com.
Although Lopez is undefeated in 24 fights, Peñalosa will bring into the ring the experience he has gained in 62 fights.
Peñalosa has already won world titles at 115 pounds and 118 pounds.
Aside from the advantage in age, Lopez is taller than the 5’4” Peñalosa. The Puerto Rican champion stands 5' 7”, thus enjoying a three-inch advantage over the Filipino champion.
Freddie Roach, who trained Peñalosa alongside Manny Pacquiao at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California, said his ward has prepared himself for “a long haul” against Lopez.
“Gerry is in great shape for this fight, he's worked very hard for this one. It won't be easy, JuanMa is a tough fighter, but Gerry will be ready,” said Roach.
Pacquiao, who will face Ricky Hatton on May 2, wished the best for his comrade.
“Alam kong pinag-handaan nya itong laban na 'to, at sana makayanan nga n’ya (I know he prepared well for this fight, I hope he makes it),” he said. With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News
