PeƱalosa admits JuanMa too strong for him
BAYAMON, Puerto Rico—Two-time world boxing champion Gerry Peñalosa offered no excuses for his loss to WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez on Saturday (Sunday in Manila), saying that the Puerto Rican boxer was too big and too strong for him.
Peñalosa, who lost via technical knockout to Lopez, said his opponent's size and strength clearly spelled the difference in their bout. The loss is Peñalosa's first via TKO.
"What was on my mind was - I would wait until he got tired. Every round, next round it would be mine but he was too strong and I lost. But I still haven't lost confidence in myself," Peñalosa told ABS-CBN reporter TJ Manotoc.
Peñalosa’s trainer, Freddie Roach, said he stopped the fight between rounds nine and ten after seeing that the Puerto Rican clearly had the upper hand in the bout.
“I told him before the ninth round, I'll give you one more round, but you have to knock him out. If you can't, I'll stop it,” said Roach.
“It was very hard for me to stop the fight. I almost cried just trying to tell him that I should stop it,” he added.
Peñalosa said he had every intention of defeating Lopez in their bout at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Puerto Rico.
“I really wanted to win and bring home the WBO belt. So I apologize to my countrymen that I am not bringing the belt,” he said.
He also thanked his supporters for continually believing in him.
“I thank God that nothing bad happened although I lost. To all my countrymen who supported me, I thank you all," he said. with a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News
