Maidana plans to attack Floyd right from opening bell

Argentina’s Marcos Maidana says it will be important for him to attack Floyd Mayweather right from the opening bell of their welterweight title unification fight on May 3 in Las Vegas.

Maidana is the underdog against the unbeaten American, but he believes he has a chance of pulling off the upset, the same way he defeated former champion Adrien Broner.

“I need to do the same thing that I did with Broner,” Maidana told Boxing Scene. “I need to go out from the get-go and attack him.”

Maidana was also the underdog against Broner, but gave the American no breathing room in their fight last December 2013. He kept up the pressure for 12 rounds en route to a decision win, giving Broner his first career loss.

“I know it will be more difficult with Floyd Mayweather,” Maidana acknowledged. “But I am ready.”

Maidana was the first to admit that the bout against Mayweather – the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world – was going to be “very difficult,” but he also said he has prepared very well for the match.

“There is no doubt that Floyd Mayweather has a great defense, but I have a great attack, and that is what I will use,” he said.
