Pinoy pug fails in WBC title bid
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Balweg Bangoyan failed in his bid to become a world champion after suffering a 5th round loss to World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka.
According to a report by PhilBoxing.com, Nishioka landed a big left hand in Bangoyan’s jaw during their fight at the Nihon Budokan in Tokyo on Friday.
The blow knocked down the Filipino prompting the referee to stop the fight 1 minute 14 seconds into the 5th round.
"Nishioka has strong punches from both flanks and I couldn't cope with them. I was disappointed, because I thought I could fight more," said Bangoyan.
For Bangoyan, 23 and ranked 10th in the WBC, it was his first defeat after winning his previous 15 bouts, including 6 knock outs.
It was the 4th defense of the title for the 33-year-old Nishioka, who improved his record to 36 wins, including 23 KOs, against 4 defeats and 3 draws.
Nishioka became the interim champion in September 2008 and became the real champion in January last year when title-holder Israel Vazquez of Mexico gave it up for health reasons.
"I was able to fight as I had planned. I've never thought about a fourth straight knockout victory since I became the champion, but it was nice to do it eventually," said Nishioka.
"I want to become an unprecedented champion that everybody in the world knows," he added. With a report from Agence France-Presse
