MANILA, Philippines – World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight champion Brian Viloria would rather not defend his title against fellow Filipino boxers , but will do so if faced with no other choice.

Viloria, who will defend the WBO belt against rival Omar Nino Romero this May 13, told PhilBoxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz that it will be tough for him to fight a fellow Pinoy. [http://philboxing.com/news/story-69400.html]

“It’s tough fighting against fellow Filipino boxers... But in the sport of boxing, especially as a world champion, it’s a business and we have to go up against each other,” Viloria said. “If we have to go up against each other, you really can’t do much.”

“If I see another Filipino fighter across the ring from me, I’m going to have to do my job and fight, and that’s what the other fighter has to do,” he added.

Among the Filipino boxers who can possibly contend for Viloria’s belt are Milan Melindo, who is undefeated and highly rated by many boxing sanctioning bodies, as well as Rocky Fuentes and Froilan Saludar.

“Mexicans fight each other all the time, and that’s what we have to do,” Viloria said, noting that the Filipino boxers can still be friends after they fight.

“There’s no choice, and we’re going to have to do it,” he added.

Viloria will be making his title defense against Romero at the Ynares Sports Center. It will be the third meeting between the two boxers, with Romero winning the first bout via decision and the rematch ending in a draw.

Their second bout was eventually turned into a no-contest after Romero failed a post-fight drug test.
