Maidana trainer: Floyd bout bigger than any Pacquiao fight
MANILA – Respected boxing trainer Robert Garcia has twice trained fighters who lost to Filipino ring legend Manny Pacquiao, but he considers Marcos Maidana’s May 3 fight against American Floyd Mayweather to be the biggest challenge of his career.
Garcia trained Antonio Margarito and Brandon Rios, who lost to Pacquiao in 2010 and 2013, respectively, and is now training Maidana, who will fight Mayweather on Saturday in Las Vegas.
While acknowledging that the Pacquiao-Margarito and Pacquiao-Rios fights were big fights, Garcia said that the Mayweather-Maidana showdown on Saturday will be on a different level.
“A fight against Floyd, you know, we’re going against the best in history,” said Garcia, as quoted by RingTV. “It is bigger than what I’ve already been involved in.”
“I’ve been involved in fights with some of the best fighters in the world, but this is definitely the biggest challenge of my career in the names that we’ve faced,” he added.
Garcia acknowledged that Pacquiao “has been the best for many years, and I know he’s done a lot and he’s accomplished a lot,” even noting that the “Pacman” has won more titles than Mayweather, the current pound-for-pound king of boxing.
“But we’ve just got to be real,” the trainer added. “Mayweather is big right now. He’s huge… A lot of people think that he’s the best in history. So that, in itself, tells you a lot.”
“He’s way, way bigger.”
The trainer is at least partly right that the fight is the biggest challenge of his career, as Maidana has been installed as a huge underdog against Mayweather. A poll of 46 RingTV experts even unanimously said that Mayweather will win on Saturday.
Garcia, in the pre-fight press conference, acknowledged the tall odds against them but pointed out that few people also believed that Maidana could beat American Adrien Broner, whom the Argentine demolished last December.
“Against Broner, Chino proved everybody wrong, and he’s ready to do it again on Saturday,” said Garcia. “We have tremendous respect for Mayweather, but on the day of the fight, Maidana is coming to win.”
