Analyst: Hatton just met ‘infinitely superior’ Pacquiao
For sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz, Ricky Hatton’s fall during the Battle of East and West at the MGM Grand Arena on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) is simple.
He just met Manny Pacquiao, said the veteran boxing commentator.
“No word can describe his performance. He was explosive,” Nathanielsz said of Pacquiao’s victory over the British champion.
Pacquiao knocked Hatton cold in the second round of their superfight.
He floored the "Hitman" twice in the first round before ending the fight with a hard left to the jaw that sent Hatton sprawling to the canvass. Referee Kenny Bayless looked at the unmoving Hatton and waved his hands to end the fight.
Underestimated Pacquiao
Nathanielsz said that part of Pacquiao’s formula in winning against Hatton was doing the unexpected.
“Nobody expected Pacquiao to be able to hit that hard,” said Nathanielsz. “Everybody said Hatton was the more powerful puncher.”
The analyst said Hatton may have underestimated Pacquiao’s punching power, especially the speed of its delivery.
“Speed accentuates power. If you put Pacquiao’s power with speed, he hits harder,” said Nathanielsz.
Nathanielsz also said that Hatton can not offer any excuses for his loss to the Filipino.
The British champ stayed away from his usual diet of beer and junk food as he entered his preparations for Pacquiao.
“Ricky Hatton normally bloats in between fights, but in this fight he cut down dramatically on that. When he went into training he was at the best shape of his life,” said Nathanielsz.
“He can not make any excuses except that he’s been fighting at 140 pounds for 13 years,” he added.
And indeed, the cause of Hatton’s loss is clear.
“He just met an infinitely superior fighter,” said Nathanielsz.
Pacquiao's fight with Hatton ended 2 minutes, 59 seconds into the second round.
"I didn't realize it would be a short fight. That was my strategy, left hook and right hook, that was going to be the key to this fight. I expected my right hook to be dangerous for him," Pacquiao said in the post-fight interview.
The win is Pacquiao's 49th victory in 54 fights and garnered the Filipino champ Hatton's International Boxing Organization 140-lb crown as well as The Ring junior welterweight championship. He also became the lineal champion in the same division.
