MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – Brett Favre, the twice-retired National Football League quarterback who turns 40 in October, is set to meet with the Minnesota Vikings about a possible comeback, ESPN reported Tuesday.
Citing unnamed sources, the sports television network said former Green Bay Packers star Favre, who played last season for the New York Jets, is set to meet with Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress about a potential NFL return.
NFL all-time passing leader Favre and his agent have said this year that Favre intends to remain retired but Childress said he would talk about the chance of signing Favre when the Jets released Favre. That happened last week.
Getting the Packers to release Favre proved a trouble spot last year when Favre reversed himself and said he wanted to return after the Packers had decided to move on with his replacement, Aaron Rodgers.
Favre made a league-record 269 consecutive starts at quarterback over 18 seasons and ended his NFL career with 5,720 completions in 9,281 passes for 65,127 yards and 464 touchdowns and 169 victories - all NFL records.
The three-time NFL Most Valuable Player could arose the ire of some of his former Packer fans by coming back with a NFC North division rival in Minnesota.
