Filipino veteran boxer Gerry Peñalosa lost his World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight title just weeks after losing his title bid against unbeaten WBO super bantam king Juan Manuel Lopez, according to a report by InsideSports.ph.

Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez said in the report that the title was stripped from Peñalosa for failure to defend it within a year.

Peñalosa won the title via 7th round technical knock out over Jhonny Gonzalez on August 11, 2007. He defended it once against former champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin whom he defeated by an 8th round TKO on April 6, 2008.

The Filipino lefty was still reigning as the WBO bantamweight champion when he stepped inside the ring versus Puerto Rico's Lopez. Peñalosa lost the match by TKO when his coach Freddie Roach halted the fight after he was badly outpunched by the younger champion.

Aside from the WBO title, Peñalosa also held the World Boxing Council super flyweight title in the late 1990’s.
