Archers beat undermanned Tigers in FilOil
MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle clinched its second win in three games after defeating the University of Sto. Tomas, 78-70, in Saturday’s FilOil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Norbert Torres, Papot Paredes and rookie Jeron Teng led the Green Archers’ attack to occupy the third spot in Group A behind the San Beda Red Lions and the Ateneo Blue Eagles
The Tigers were without head coach Pido Jarencio and center Karim Abdul as they fell to a 1-3 win-loss record.
Torres had 18 points and 12 rebounds, including four straight baskets, to give the Green Archers a 78-69 lead to finish off the Tigers.
Teng finished with 14 points and Paredes had 12 for the Green Archers, as they galvanized their team in the fourth quarter after the Growling Tigers stayed within distance.
Aljohn Mariano scored 19 points, while Kevin Ferrer and Jeric Fortuna both had 13 makers as they helped the Tigers stay in the game after trailing by nine points, 50-59, after the third quarter.
But Paredes scored six of La Salle’s first seven baskets to open the fourth period and Teng had four on the following stretch to increase the Green Archers’ gap further.
In other matches, National University outclassed College of St. Benilde, 71-52, to stay unbeaten after five games.
Emmanuel Mbe and Bobby Ray Parks each scored 15 points for the Bulldogs, who remain on top of Group B.
Mapua defeated University of the Philippines, 61-56, with Gab Banal leading the way with 15 points. The Cardinals improved their record to 1-2.
