Donaire wants 'impressive win' against Vetyeka
MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire needs to win impressively when he challenges world featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa on May 31 in Macau.
Some have considered Donaire the underdog in the bout against Vetyeka, who is putting his WBA featherweight title on the line against "The Filipino Flash."
"I have to win impressively," said Donaire. "What we're working on is to win impressively."
Donaire is hoping that his hard work in training will pay off against Vetyeka and that he gets to unleash his full potential in the title fight.
"I feel that I can still show more," he said. "Hopefully, kung makuha ko lahat ng training, at 100% kami sa laban, makukuha ko 'yun."
A knockout win is possible, as Donaire expressed confidence in his speed, power and game plan.
"Kapag nandoon 'yun lahat, I think makukuha ko 'yung (knockout)," he said.
While he refused to tab the Vetyeka fight as a "make or break" match, Donaire did acknowledge that it will have an impact on his future as an entertainer.
"The networks in the States are fighting over me, and the promoters are fighting over me. They're seeing the next fight as the telling of where it’s gonna be," said Donaire.
"They're looking for me to be the next big star of boxing, especially in the States, where they're playing tug-of-war – HBO and Showtime, Top Rank and Golden Boy – they’re all pulling me to go to their side," he added.
"The next fight is the telling. You'll know if I'm up to that (Manny) Pacquiao and (Floyd) Mayweather level, you'll see it in the next fight."
