MANILA – UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva said he didn’t mean to miss his media obligations for his UFC 162 title defense against Chris Weidman.

He claimed in MMA Weekly that there was a miscommunication between him and the UFC regarding his media appearances in the US.

The Brazilian champion said he was made aware of the appointment when he was on his way to the Los Angeles International airport (LAX) to catch a flight to Brazil.

“I’ve never missed a single appointment with UFC,” said Silva. “I would never book a trip to Brazil if I knew I was supposed to be in Los Angeles.”

Silva will make his 11th title defense against Weidman in the main event of UFC 162. The fight is slated on July 7 in Las Vegas.

His media appearances were supposed to help boost ticket sales leading to the fight.

Silva's non-appearance resulted to a $50,000 fine from UFC.

“We had a full media day set up for him in Los Angeles, and he just decided he didn’t want to do it,” UFC president Dana White said. “So he’s being fined $50,000.”
