Stan Van Gundy signed a five-year, $35 million contract on Wednesday to become head coach and president of basketball operations of the Detroit Pistons.
Van Gundy, who has a regular-season record of 371-208 (.641) in seven-plus seasons as coach and has reached the NBA playoffs seven times, will be formally introduced at a press conference in Auburn Hills, Mich., Thursday.
Beloved point guard John Stockton could be one of dozens of candidates to become head coach of the Utah Jazz.
General manager Dennis Lindsey did not deny Stockton was a candidate. Stockton has not been a head coach at any level. That puts him on even footing with Steve Kerr, a candidate for multiple jobs, who reportedly is of interest to the Jazz.
With Stan Van Gundy landing in Detroit, the Golden State Warriors are primed to make another run at Steve Kerr and are also focused on Lionel Hollins in their ongoing effort to replace fired coach Mark Jackson.
Kerr, who remains a strong candidate for the New York Knicks, met with Warriors team officials before working as a game analyst on TNT's broadcast of the Clippers-Warriors Western Conference semifinals on Tuesday in Oklahoma City. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
