Promoter declares Argentine the 'new Pacquiao'
MANILA, Philippines – Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer touted Argentine boxer Lucas Matthysse as the “new Manny Pacquiao” following his sensational victory over Lamont Peterson Saturday in Atlantic City.
Matthysse (34 wins, 2 losses, 32 KOs) showed off his power by knocking down Peterson twice in the third round of their non-title fight.
“We have a new Manny Pacquiao,” Schaefer declared, as quoted by ESPN.com. “He’s from Argentina, and his name is Lucas Matthysse.”
“Words can’t describe how good he is, how exciting he is, and how hungry he is. You can sit in your seat and you don’t question if he’s going to knock his opponent out. You only question when,” he added.
Through a translator, Matthysse said the bout showed that he was the best fighter in the light-welterweight division.
“No one has dominated Peterson like that,” he said. “I gained a lot of experience from my two fights with Zab (Judah) and Devon (Alexander), and now I know I have to win by knockout.”
Matthysse lost close decisions to Judah in 2010 and to Alexander in 2011, before embarking on a five-fight winning streak going into his clash against Peterson.
Schaefer said that with Matthysse’s victory, he is now in line for a shot against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia.
“Danny Garcia always has his doubters. He’s underestimated. That’s why this fight between Garcia and Matthysse will be a big fight,” he told RingTV.
