Barangay Ginebra moved closer for the remaining outright semifinals berth after hammering out a 122-85 decision over hapless Coca-Cola Wednesday night in the 2008-09 Motolite-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ronald Tubid led seven Kings in double figures in scoring with 20 as Ginebra extended its winning streak to seven games, and is now a victory away of claiming the No. 2 spot in the best-of-seven semifinal round.

The Kings improved their mark to 8-5 but coach Jong Uichico's wards have to beat Alaska on Friday to avoid the playoff for the second spot.

"It doesn't take eight games to the semis, we really need nine games. Ang maganda lang control namin," said Uichico, who also drew 18 markers from import David Noel.

"The opportunity is there, we just have to take advantage of this opportunity," he added.

Cyrus Baguio, Chico Lanete and Jayjay Helterbrand added 13 points apiece for the Kings while Paul Artadi and JC Intal had 12 and 11 points respectively in a show of balanced attack against the listless Tigers.

Ronjay Buenafe led Coke with 21 points but import James Penny was held to just 10 on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. The Tigers dropped to 5-8.

After taking a 23-13 first quarter-lead, Ginebra opened the second period with another fiery run and went on to outscore its opponent in the next 12 minutes, 29-15, to take a commanding 52-28 halftime lead.

The Kings' lead reached as high as 44 points, 80-46, with 4:04 left in the third quarter and since then, Ginebra was never seriously threatened by Coke.

"Sobrang ganda lang ang nilaro namin ngayon and we caught them off night," said Uichico as his team shot 55 percent, converting 47 of its 85 attempts. "But we really wanted to play hard because Coke also needs to win."

Asi Taulava and Nic Belasco contributed 12 markers apiece for coach Kenneth Duremdes.

Coke shot 38 percent (35-of-92) from the field including a 6-of-37 stint from the rainbow territory.

Alaska beats Talk 'N Text

In the second game, Alaska crawled back from 18 points down and turned back Talk ‘N Text, 122-115, in overtime to tie Coke with 5-8 mark each in what could be an interesting race for the No. 8 spot.

Rosell Ellis finished with 38 points and 16 rebounds but it was the heroics of LA Tenorio, Willie Miller and John Ferriols that helped the Aces to complete the rally and pulled the rug under the Tropang Texters.

Miller sent the game in overtime with a buzzer-beating lay-up over Jason Castro, 105-105, then Ferriols scored five straight points to shatter the 115-all deadlock to take a 120-115 lead and took the game for good and foiled TNT's bid for a possible playoff for the No. spot.

Tropang Texters finished their classification phase with 7-7 and were now relegated to the knockout wildcard pairings.
