Red Wings down Blackhawks in NHL overtime
DETROIT, Michigan – Mikael Samuelsson's goal 5:14 into overtime lifted defending Stanley Cup champions Detroit to a 3-2 victory over Chicago in the National Hockey League Western Conference finals.
The victory gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, from which the winner advances to the Stanley Cup finals.
In overtime, the Red Wings took advantage of Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell's turnover near Detroit's blue line.
Jiri Hudler skated up the left with the puck and pushed it right and Valtteri Filppula's pass set up Samuelsson's shot.
Jonathan Toews' second goal of the game with 7:40 remaining in regulation pulled Chicago into a 2-2 tie.
Toews had given the Blackhawks the lead in the first period, but Brian Rafalski equalized for Detroit later in the first and Dan Cleary made it 2-1 early in the second period.
Chris Osgood made 37 saves for Detroit, who travel to Chicago for game three on Friday.
Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 35 shots for the Blackhawks.
Cleary scored for the third straight game, following up his two-goal performance in game one and his goal against Anaheim that clinched Detroit's series victory in the conference semi-finals.
