Domingo seeks revenge for Z Gorres
MANILA, Philippines – Bantamweight contender Michael Domingo will have revenge on his mind when he clashes with Colombian fighter Luis Melendez on Sunday.
Melendez is the same fighter faced by fallen boxer Z Gorres last November when he collapsed inside the boxing ring because of brain trauma.
Domingo, the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental bantamweight champ and a very close friend of Gorres, will fight the Colombian at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino. The fight card is aptly called “Hangad na Paghihiganti”.
“This is a very emotional one for me. I cried when I learned what happened to Gorres. I am dedicating this fight to him,” Domingo told Philboxing.com's Ronnie Nathanielsz in an earlier interview.
Domingo has a record of 39-14-2 with 17 knockouts while Melendez has 26-5-1 with 21 knockouts.
The fight card also includes the bout between come-backing Jimrex Jaca and James Kimori of Kenya, Africa. Also in the under card are fast rising boxing stars Jason Pagara and James Bacon.
Gorres, who underwent several brain surgeries after the fight, warned Domingo that Melendez is a very dangerous foe.
“[Domingo] should not make the same mistake I did. I relaxed my defense believing I was much ahead on points. You cannot do that with Melendez. He is too dangerous,” said Gorres.
