UFC champ Jones arrested on suspicion of DUI
MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Champion light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) early Saturday in New York (Sunday in Manila).
TMZ.com initially reported the news.
Jones was arrested around 5 a.m. in Binghamton, New York after he crashed his Bentley into a pole. TMZ reported that the UFC star was taken into custody by the Broome Country Sheriff and was released a few hours later after his mother posted bail.
In a statement released to MMA Fighting, First Round Management, which represents Jones, confirmed that the fighter was arrested.
"I can confirm that Jon Jones was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI," said Malki Kawa of First Round Management. "While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, First Round Management fully supports Jon."
"We are asking for fans and mdeia to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time."
MMA Fighting also reported that according to the Bromme County Sheriff’s office, Jones suffered minor injuries. The Sheriff’s office did not comment if there where passengers in the car with the UFC fighter.
UFC president Dana White has not released an official statement, but in a text message to TMZ, he said, "Wow, I guess it’s not my week, is it?"
Jones recently defended his light heavyweight belt against former champion "Suga" Rashad Evans at UFC 145 in Atlanta, winning handily via unanimous decision.
He is set to defend his title again at UFC 151 against fight veteran Dan Henderson on September 1 in Las Vegas.
