Alcantara, Irish partner settle for semis finish
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Francis Casey Alcantara and Irish John Morrissey failed to get past their German opponents in their doubles semifinal match at the 51st Trofeo Bonfiglio 2010 in Milan, Italy.
Alcantara and Morrissey were eliminated by Kevin Krawietz and Peter Heller in straight sets, 4-6, 2-6.
The 4th seeded German pair, however, failed to clinch the doubles title after losing to the 5th seeded tandem of Puerto Rican Duilio Beretta and Ecuadorian Roberto Quiroz.
Beretta and Quiroz were named as doubles champions after scoring a 7-6(4), 5-7 [10-7] victory.
En route to the semifinal, Alcantara and Morrissey beat Italians Marco Ceccahinato and Giammarco Micolani, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinal.
They also defeated Austrians Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Dominic Thiem in the 2nd Round, 6-3, 7-6(5), and Americans Nick Chappell and Dane Webb, 6-1, 7-5, in the opening round.
Alcantara’s fellow Filipino netter Jeson Patrombon saw some doubles action on the Milan clay as well.
Patrombon and Briton Richard Gabb edged Brazilian Guilherme Clezar and Japanese Yasutaka Uchiyama, 6-3, 2-6 [10-7], in the 1st Round. Italians Ceccahinato and Micolani ousted Patrombon and Gabb in the 2nd Round, 6-1, 7-6(4).
In the singles event, Alcantara lost in the 1st round while Patrombon went out in the 2nd round. – With a report from the International Tennis Federation
