Bradley claims he's better than Marquez
MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated boxer Timothy Bradley Jr. of the United States is confident he can pull off an upset against Filipino champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, because he believes he is an even better boxer than Pacquiao's most recent opponent, Juan Manuel Marquez.
Speaking with RingTV, Bradley said that if Pacquiao "couldn't stop a 38-year-old (Marquez), he's definitely not going to stop a 28-year-old like myself, Tim Bradley."
Pacquiao was a heavy favorite when he fought Marquez for the third time last November, but struggled against the Mexican counter-puncher. He still won via majority decision, but it was a controversial result as many pundits believed Marquez deserved the victory.
"They may think that Marquez just has Manny's number, but whatever Marquez can do, I can do ten times better," Bradley said.
"He's great at counter-punching, and I'm devastating at counter-punching. My counter-punching ability is unbelievable. I beat most of my guys on counter-punching," he added. "It's effective aggressiveness with counter-punching."
Bradley also criticized Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach for being "naive about his fighter."
"Roach has confidence in his fighter, and that’s great, but I don’t think that they realize what they’re getting into, to be honest with you," he said.
Pacquiao will take a 15- fight winning streak into their welterweight clash, and Bradley insists he will be the one to snap that winning streak.
"This guy is not invincible. This guy is beatable. 'm going to prove it to everybody... That's my main focus, is to follow my gameplan and dominate," Bradley said.
"Regardless of what his track record says or whatever, he's going to have to show me he's better than me, and that's the bottom line."
But Roach, the Hall-of-Fame boxing trainer, disagrees with Bradley’s assertion.
"I've been watching Bradley a lot, and I don't think he's that good of a counter-puncher," he said. "He's very offensive, he comes to fight and I think that it will be a good fight for everybody."
"I've prepared my game plan for Manny after watching many tapes of Bradley. We have the game plan set," he added.
As for Pacquiao, the Filipino champion said he does not what Bradley will bring into the ring come June 9.
"But I'm prepared for whatever he brings on that night," he added. "We expect that he will be in 100% condition."
