Ginebra mandhandles Meralco
MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra made it two in a row under new coach Jeffrey Cariaso as it ripped Meralco, 95-82, in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena on Saturday.
Zaccheus Mason had a superb performance for the Gin Kings, posting a double-double of 32 points and 19 rebounds while helping Ginebra tie Air21 on top of the standings with a 2-0 slate.
Greg Slaughter also had a solid effort for Ginebra by scoring 22 points to go with his 10 rebounds.
Coach Cariaso appreciated his team effort of sticking with the triangle offense despite having a woesful first quarter against Meralco.
“Every game that you play is different. What I like tonight is that we stuck with the system,” said the coach in the PBA website. “We didn’t start that well but we kept the game close and continued to persevere until we pulled it off.”
Ginebra was caught flat-footed in the opening quarter before it caught up with Meralco near the end of the first half, 39-35. The
Gin Kings then asserted their might starting with a 64-54 lead going to the final period.
The Gin Kings’ key to victory was that they were able to control the boards, outrebounding the Bolts, 57-48.
Terrence Williams had a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds.
The Meralco import, however, made only 7 of if 24 field goal attempts, forcing their coach Ryan Gregorio to cut Williams from their roster.
Gregorio said in an Aktv report that Williams didn't fit their system.
They will bring back Mario West to save their Governors' Cup bid.
