MANILA – The University of Perpetual Help Altas got big baskets from Juneric Baloria, Akhuetie Bright, and Earl Thompson as they subdued the Lyceum Philippines University-B Pirates, 89-73, on Sunday.

The victory allowed the Altas to assure themselves of a semi-finals slot in the 20th Fr. Martin Summer Cup.

Baloria fired 23 points, Bright had 16, and Thompson scored 13 for the Altas, who picked up their eighth straight victory in the pre-season tournament.

The Jonas Kintanar-coached Altas are now just one win away from completing a nine-game sweep of their Group A assignment, ahead of the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals.

Bright provided the inside presence for Perpetual Help, and his follow-up shot at the 6:13 mark of the third period allowed the Altas to pad their lead to 54-48 after having entered the second half with a four-point advantage, 44-40.

They were also steady at the line in the last four minutes of the game, going five-of-six from the charity stripe to extend their lead to 12, 61-49.

A Baloria triple with 3:25 left in the quarter gave Perpetual a 65-49 lead, and Chrisper Elopre and Thompson drilled back-to-back triples at the end of the third frame to allow them to enter the final canto with a 72-58 advantage.

Meanwhile, in the juniors division, the EAC-ICA Brigadiers weathered the outside shooting of promising cager Patrick Lapena to put away the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs, 76-75.

John Menil fired 20 points for the LPU Junior Pirates, who turned back the University of Perpetual Help Altalettes, 85-79, in another game in the juniors division.
