Floyd-Maidana gets less than 1M PPV buys: report

MANILA – Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s status as pay-per-view (PPV) star may be put in doubt after posting a "below par" PPV record in his recent fight against Argentine slugger Marcos Maidana.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix reported that the Mayweather-Maidana fight generated an estimated 900,000 pay-per-view buys.

“The 900,000 buys represent a precipitous drop from the 2.2 million buys Mayweather generated in his fight with Saul Alvarez last September and is comparable to the number of buys Mayweather got in his May, 2013 fight against Robert Guerrero, which also failed to eclipse 1 million,” said the report.

“Money Mayweather” was guaranteed $32 million for the fight, which saw him struggling against the tough Argentine before he gutted out a controversial majority decision.

Mayweather has been berating his Filipino rival Manny Pacquiao for unremarkable PPV buys in recent years.

But Mayweather’s PPV buys with Maidana, a relatively unknown in the US, show that it takes two boxing superstars to generate an impressive PPV hit.

The fighting congressman garnered 800,000 PPV buys in his rematch against Timothy Bradley last April.
