MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University (DLSU), this year's host for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), on Tuesday launched a heroes theme to kick off the league's 73rd Season.

UAAP President Bro. Bernard “Bernie” Oca FSC of DLSU explained the theme to abs-cbnNEWS.com: “Because we need heroes… I want people to realize there’s a hero in each and every one of us.”

Oca spoke during the UAAP Season 73 Media Briefing at the North Wing Conservatory, DLSU along Taft Avenue in Manila Tuesday morning.

He said that athletes perform heroic acts when they make sacrifices and dedicate themselves to their respective sports.

He hopes that such heroism will inspire non-athletes to be heroes in their own way in their chosen games in life.

“We are really embarking on a new journey,” Oca continued, referring to the imminent take over of the new administration when President-apparent Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III swears oath on June 30.

He said he wants to impart a sense of hope and the possibility of a better future on UAAP stakeholders—viewers, officials, alumni, athletes, and other members of universities.

He added that he wants them to “be heroic during this time. And help our leaders build this nation.”

Centennial celebration

Oca, meanwhile, shared how DLSU came to host the 73rd UAAP.

He said DLSU asked National University (NU) to give it the hosting job as it prepares for its centenary.

While DLSU’s centennial celebration is from June 16, 2011 to 2012, the school is already gearing for the grand anniversary as early as this year.

Oca revealed that alumnus Mark Reyes will serve as the director for the Opening Ceremony on July 10. He also disclosed that celebrity alumni Gary Valenciano, Ogie Alcasid and Enchong Dee will take part in the Opening Ceremony.

DLSU will square off with the University of the Philippines (UP) in the first game. The details of the second game have yet to be ironed out.

DLSU's Bro. Bernard Oca FSC makes various UAAP announcements during the Season 73 media briefing on June 1, 2010 at the North Wing Conservatory.

Additional competitions

Oca announced that the much-awaited showdown between the DLSU Green Archers and erstwhile rival Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles will take place on the weekend of July 24 to 25.

The UAAP will make known the exact date of the Ateneo-La Salle game once venue concerns have been settled.

He also mentioned other sports apart from basketball during the media briefing. “UAAP is not just the men’s basketball tournament,” he noted.

He said the beach volleyball tournament will begin on the weekend of August 7 to 8 at La Salle Green Hills in Mandaluyong City while the swimming tourney will start from September 23 to 26 at the TRACE Aquatic Sports Complex in Los Baños, Laguna.

He added that the UAAP is looking for air-conditioned venues for other sports such as taekwondo, judo, fencing and table tennis. For badminton, the UAAP has requested the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex to turn on the air-conditioning at the courts during play.

As for the Closing Ceremony, Oca pointed out that not much attention is given to it. He said he wants more people to attend the event apart from the athletes who will be feted during the ceremony.

Because of this, the UAAP will hold 2 new competitions during the Closing Ceremony—street dance and drum line.

But Oca reminded that the results of the street dance and drum line competitions will not be added to the overall computation. – Report by Ma. Rosanna Mina, abs-cbnNEWS.com
