Pinays win opening matches in Women’s 10-Ball
Local cue masters led by 11-year-old Jullian Go posted wins in their opening matches against respective opponents in the World Women’s 10-Ball Championships being held at the SM North Edsa in Quezon City.
Go, who defeated Ji-Won Hyun of South Korea to earn a qualification for the Women’s 10-Ball, defeated Australian opponent Lyndall Hulley, 5-3.
“With this sport, may bright future ako," said Go.
She explained that she only stumbled upon billiards when she was looking for a sport where she can excel.
"Noong maliit pa ako, wala akong sports. 'Yong bowling hindi ko kaya, badminton, lahat 'yon… so nakita ko 'yong billiards,” said Go, who advanced to the next round.
Filipino Mary Ann Basas also won over Akemi Kajirani of Japan to join Go.
Basas scored 5 racks against Kajirani’s 1.
Women’s World 9-Ball 2007 second placer Rubilen Amit tried to duplicate the feat made by Go and Basas.
But her effort was quashed by current No. 1 Kelly “Kwikfire” Fisher, who also competed at the recently-concluded Philippine Open Pool Championship.
“Rubilen was a fantastic player and I never gave her a chance. I’m very pleased with my performance and I’m hoping to continue to play like that,” said the UK native.
Fisher posted a 5-1 win over Amit.
The first day also featured a highly-anticipated showdown between billiard beauties Jeanette “Black Widow” Lee and Shanell Loraine.
Korean-American Lee cleaned the racks (5-0) to dispose Filipino-American Loraine. With a report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
